Applying to Oxford University in 2024-2025 Your Guide

Now that we’re into September, many people are starting to fill out their university application forms with UCAS. It is an essential part of your education journey because the university you go to does influence your future qualifications and career.

If you have an exceptional aptitude within your field of study, then a university like Oxford would be happy to take you on and add you to the list of successful alums. However, applying to Oxford University is a process which you need to understand properly if you’re going to succeed. So, with that being said, let’s take a look at applying to Oxbridge.

Applying to Oxford university

The Basics

If you want to be able to study at Oxford, you need to apply the year before your study. So, as we’re currently in 2022, an application needs to be submitted this year to try and study at Oxford in 2023.

The application process has been open since May 2022, and some people will have already started their application by this point. However, the submission process has only just started this month in September.

You don’t have long left to submit your application to Oxford - the deadline for all Oxford applications is 15 October. The application needs to be fully completed by this point and submitted before this deadline - this includes your academic reference.

As Oxford won’t accept all late applications, you need to make sure you’ve got your application sorted by this time.

Your UCAS Application For Oxford

Completing a UCAS application for Oxford university is the same as completing an application for any other university, except that the deadline for doing so is just earlier for Oxford.

The UCAS website is particular about what an application should and should not contain. Your application should not include certificates, transcripts, or other qualifications already received during your education. However, the one exception to this rule is if you already have a degree from another university. You’ll be contacted if you’ve been offered a place at Oxford.

Oxford Application Checklist

Ensure you’ve done the following things before applying to Oxford University.

Pick Your Course

Make sure that you have selected a course that you want to study at Oxford. You should note that you can not apply to Oxford and Cambridge in the same year, and you can only apply to one course at Oxford.

Check Your Admission Requirements

You need to check your admission requirements for each course before you apply. Your specific grades and subjects required for each class will be shown on the course page.

Preference or Open?

It would help if you decided whether or not you want to express a preference for a particular college in your application or submit it as an open application. If you submit an open application, you’ll be assigned to an institution with fewer applications that year - maximising your chances of a successful application.

What Should Your Application Contain?

Submitting a UCAS application is part of applying to Oxford University. Your application will be composed of the following things:

  • Personal information about you, including an email address. You should check this address frequently to keep track of the application.

  • Details about your education history, as well as any qualifications you’ve already achieved (GCSEs, BTEC, NVQs, etc.).

  • Your personal statement, which outlines why you want to sign up for your desired course.

  • Your academic reference. Your teacher or advisor will complete this for you, and this needs to be completed before the deadline takes place.

  • Your fee payment is needed to complete the application process.

The Admission Test

Most courses that you can study at Oxford require you to take an admission test - this is to demonstrate you have the aptitude necessary for study.

The registration for this test is not part of your UCAS application, nor is it automatic - you’ll need to sort it out for yourself.

Writing a Personal Statement

As part of your application to Oxford University, you’ll be expected to submit a personal statement. This statement is crucial because it will contain information about you and essentially convince Oxford why they should accept you for a course.

The personal statement is a part of the application where a lot of people are known to struggle. Despite proficiency in their field of study, many people are not confident in writing prose. The Oxbridge personal statement, an exercise in objectively evaluating yourself as a person, is a difficult task for even experienced writers.

If you’re going to do well when it comes to your personal statement, it can be a good idea to get it written by an expert. We’re happy to help you when it comes to a personal statement, for example. Our team has extensive experience when it comes to writing a personal statement, and you’ll be able to use our services to craft a statement that will help you to thrive.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to applying to Oxford, the process is simple enough. It is a very similar process to any other application, but the deadline of 15 October puts a clock on the process, so you’ll need to keep it in mind and work quickly.

You should coordinate with your lecturer or advisor and express your intention to apply to Oxford. They’ll be able to help make sure that you apply for the university in a prompt fashion and according to UCAS rules.

Oxford University is an educational institution with a rich and diverse history. It is widely considered to be one of the premier universities in the world, and it is essential to understand that the entry criteria are often strict.

If you have the ability to apply to Oxford, it would be a real feather in your metaphorical cap, but you need to follow the process. We can support applicants with writing a personal statement where necessary. After all, it would be a shame if your ability to study was hindered by a struggle to write a personal statement.
