Midwifery Personal Statement

Caring for others through my current employment as a Nursing Assistant has given me enormous satisfaction. Going home at the end of a shift knowing I have made a contribution to someone’s life is the most rewarding feeling. This experience has inspired me to gain a professional qualification in order to progress to the next level of my career and make the best use of my skills to help others. Three years ago I decided to change careers, moving into the health and social care profession as an NHS Bank Nursing Assistant. I have worked in close partnership with a nurse across a wide range of areas including Burns, Orthopaedics, Elderly, Children and Acute wards. I love the variety in nursing, both in terms of the work and the diverse range of people you meet each day. I have learnt that excellent communication skills are essential, both in order to show empathy, sensitivity and consideration to patients and visitors, and to ensure all members of the healthcare team are aware of any changes in a patient’s condition. Working in a multidisciplinary team in a busy and challenging environment has also developed my teamwork skills and efficiency.

Another aspect of nursing which I love is the constant training and self-improvement. Recently I have attended NHS courses on venepuncture and cannulation, in which I faced a personal challenge to overcome my phobia of needles. Throughout my working life I have maintained part-time academic study through the Open University and Wiltshire College, including courses on Health and Social Care. I take great pride in expanding my knowledge so I can perform my job better, and look forward to the benefits a Midwifery degree will give me.

Prior to my healthcare career, I have a background in business administration and the army. Between 2005 and 2007 I worked as a Finance Assistant then a New Business Coordinator for an IT company. Through these roles I developed the attention to detail and organised written communication skills which are fundamental in nursing in order to accurately complete patient records. I also gained experience of direct customer care, in a role which demanded the ability to provide timely resolution to their queries. My patience and politeness that enabled me to deal with difficult customers has assisted me greatly in my healthcare career.

In 2002 I joined the British Army as a Supplies Specialist which was one of the proudest moments in my life. My role involved ordering, storing and despatching goods and materials in order to protect and serve human life. It made me aware of an inner strength that existed inside me, and taught me the value of camaraderie and teamwork. The army has definitely helped me evolve into the strong and confident individual that I am today.

In my spare time I am a keen sportswoman, and particularly enjoy running, swimming and netball. I have played netball since the age of nine, reinforcing my ability to work well in a team, motivating myself as well as others. My ability to react rapidly to new situations and adapt my technique on the netball court reflects my flexible approach in the workplace. I am quick to grasp new ideas and concepts, and able to develop innovative and creative solutions to problems. As a mature student I truly appreciate the value of education, and will at all times give my full commitment to the course.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my application, I look forward to hearing from you.
